Why Portescap — Real Differences That Come From Engineering Excellence

Even motors of the same frame size can perform very differently in real applications. The ultra-precision mechanical design DNA Portescap has built since 1931 is realized through patented winding technology and a slotless construction, translating into three concrete benefits: stronger torque, lower heat, and smoother rotation. The figures below are all drawn from Portescap's official technical literature.

Up to 30%more torque than a comparable slotted motor, for 2-pole designs
Up to 100%more mechanical power output achievable within the same frame size
0cogging (detent) torque — eliminated at the source by the slotless design
100,000 rpmmaximum speed supported across Portescap's brushless DC lineup

U-Coil™ & Ultra EC™ Slotless Winding Technology

Portescap's proprietary U-Coil™ winding technology maximizes magnetic-field efficiency by winding copper wire in a straight pattern rather than the traditional skewed approach. It generates more torque per coil turn while eliminating the radial space wasted by conventional winding, making the motor more compact. Because the design is ironless and slotless, iron losses from hysteresis and eddy currents don't occur in the first place, which shows up as concrete practical benefits.

  • Less energy is needed for the same mechanical output, extending run time for battery-powered portable and mobile equipment.
  • Minimized joule loss and iron loss mean less heat and lower operating temperature, which in turn means more overload capability and longer service life.
  • The slotless construction eliminates cogging (detent) torque at the source, enabling smooth, vibration-free, precise rotation and position control — especially at low speed.
  • A linear torque–speed characteristic simplifies control algorithms and makes position and velocity control more predictable (see the Motor Concepts page for the underlying principles).
CriteriaSlotless ConstructionSlotted Construction
Detent (cogging) torqueNone — no rotor equilibrium position, so no cogging occursDetent torque present due to rotor equilibrium positions
High-speed characteristicsExcellent — no iron loss, so efficiency holds up at high speedRelatively more heat loss and reduced efficiency
Battery-powered run timeExcellent — lower losses mean longer run time on the same batteryRelatively higher power consumption

Longer Life From a Brushless Design

Because a brushless DC design has no mechanical brush contact, there's no commutator/brush friction to wear down in the first place. As a result, motor life is effectively determined only by ball-bearing wear, and the coils aren't damaged even when energized at standstill, enabling continuous, high-reliability operation.

Reliability Already Proven in Harsh Environments

  • Flight-critical slotless BLDC solutions that pass DO-160G environmental qualification testing — with a supply history in defense applications such as cockpit controls and missile fin actuation.
  • Medical motors and controllers rated for up to 1,000 autoclave sterilization cycles — proven in high-reliability medical fields such as surgical robots, infusion pumps, and diagnostic equipment.
  • A global network of manufacturing sites and application engineering centers works engineer-to-engineer, from motor selection through gearhead/encoder integration and performance optimization, from prototype through full production.

Chosen for the Newest Applications Too — Humanoid Robots & Bionic Prosthetics

Reproducing human movement demands actuators that are compact, lightweight, and high-performing all at once. According to 2026 reporting from robotics trade outlet RoboticsTomorrow, Portescap supports humanoid robot OEMs from prototype through production, offering form factors ranging from miniature cylindrical motors that fit inside fingers and palms to flat motors that deliver high torque at wrist and arm joints.

  • The Athlonix 16DCT, a brush DC model, delivers up to 5.24 mNm of torque and is used as a cost-effective option for driving robotic joints (see our Brush DC Motors page for more).
  • In bionic prosthetic hand projects, Portescap motors have been reported to reproduce roughly 80% of natural human hand movements at low weight and reasonable cost.
  • Brush DC, hybrid stepper, and brushless DC motor types can be combined axis-by-axis to independently optimize speed, torque, quietness, and efficiency.

Portescap × PMD

In November 2024, Portescap and Performance Motion Devices (PMD) introduced the PCR 56/06 EC SD developer's kit, pairing a Portescap brushless DC motor with PMD's ION®/CME N-Series drive and Pro-Motion® software — an integrated solution that shortens development time from prototype to production. Because motors and drives are so often evaluated together in fields like lab automation equipment, surgical robots, and wafer-handling systems, we also introduce the PMD lineup on this site. See the PMD Motion Control Solutions page for details.

Portescap: 90+ Years of Precision Engineering

Portescap's roots trace back to 1931 in Switzerland. The precision-mechanical DNA that produced Incabloc®, a wristwatch shock-protection device that became a Swiss watch-industry standard, expanded into electric motors in 1970 and carries through today into miniature precision motion-control solutions used across aerospace, medical, robotics, and industrial automation. The micron-level tolerances mastered in watch-component manufacturing became the foundation for a broad motor technology portfolio spanning brushless DC, brush DC, can-stack and disc-magnet stepper, and linear actuator technologies.

YearMilestone
1931Fritz Marti founded Le Porte-Echappement Universel SA in Switzerland and developed Incabloc®, a shock-protection device for wristwatches.
1950sThe conical-jewel, lyre-spring Incabloc design was adopted in roughly three out of every four Swiss watches, becoming an industry-standard technology.
1962–1969The company registered the ‘Portescap’ brand name (1962) and formally adopted it as its corporate name (April 1, 1969).
1970Extended its precision watchmaking expertise into electric motors and linear actuators. Amid the Quartz Crisis that upended the Swiss watch industry, it reinvented itself as a supplier of miniature stepper motors for quartz movements.
1997Acquired by U.S.-based API Motion, completing its transition into a dedicated precision motion control company.
2000–2018Continued expanding globally under Danaher (2000) → Fortive (2016) → Altra Industrial Motion (2018).
2023 –Became a brand of Regal Rexnord, a global industrial automation group, and continues to supply precision motion solutions today.

How easy is it to control a Portescap motor?

PMD's Axis Wizard applies pre-tuned parameters automatically once you pick your motor model from a list — it even self-diagnoses and corrects wiring or rotation-direction mistakes.

  • Parameters applied automatically from a model list
  • Wiring & direction errors self-diagnosed and corrected
  • Auto-Run scripts work without a host PC
